I ran into kbdsock.dll today. It is installed as a "AppInit_DLLs".

I've scanned kbdsock.dll with the virus-scanners over at virustotal.com, but none of them detected the file: http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/a2f11508ccef38b3c939763d4cc9b839f1f110e72cde663c7d5d9d622338c8e4-1263126935

I'll come back here in a few days and scan it again.

@Kailash: The error message you get indicates that the kbdsock.dll malware file is loaded into your disk cleaner and cause some memory access problem. If you delete this malware file, I'm sure your disk cleaner will work without any problem.

I removed kdbsock.dll with FreeFixer. kbdsock.dll appears in the scan result under "AppInit_DLLs".

This that solve the problem?

Ran into kbdsock.dll. I can't open my IE so I can't access any online help/scans. Any advice on what I can do? I tried looking for it in system32 with no luck. Also searched for AppInit_DLLs with no luck either.

@Drew: Here's how you can remove the kbdsock.dll file with Freefixer:

1. Download and install FreeFixer: http://www.freefixer.com/download.html It will not cost you anything.
2. Start FreeFixer and click "Scan". The scan will be finished in about 5 minutes.
3. In the scan result, locate items which mention kbdsock.dll, and check its "Delete" checkbox. kbdsock.dll usually appears under "AppInit_DLLs" and/or "Recently created or modified files" in FreeFixer's scan result. DO NOT check anything else for removal, unless you are 100% sure it's malware.
4. Click "Fix" and restart your machine.
5. Start a FreeFixer scan again.
7. Verify that kbdsock.dll no longer appear anywhere in the scan result.
8. Done.

Did this completely remove the kbdsock.dll file from your computer?

Hi Roger,

Thanks for that post, however I'm not able to open my internet explorer at all. I can't access the internet from my infected computer. I'm posting via my iPhone right now. Please advise.

@Drew: Maybe one of these strategies will help you:

1. Try to start your computer in Safe Mode with networking. That may allow you to access the Internet and download a scanner of your choice. Here's more info on safe mode: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safe_mode

2. Maybe it is possible to download anti-virus programs to your iPhone and transfer the installation files to your computer?

You mentioned that you checked both the c:\windows\system32 folder and AppInit_DLLs in the registry, but kbdsock.dll did not appear there. What sign of the kbdsock.dll infection do you see on your computer?

@Deb: If you like you can post your FreeFixer log at the user group and I'll have a look at it. There may be some additional files that needs to be removed to prevent kbdsock.dll from reloading.
