I just ran into a problem installing the\u00a0KB4074588<\/strong>\u00a0update on Windows 10<\/strong> and would like to share how I solved the problem. The error code for the failed installation was\u00a00x80070bc2<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The problem started when Windows Update reported that\u00a0KB4074588 was available with the “Awaiting restart<\/strong>” status.<\/p>\n

After restarting, I got the “We couldn’t finish installing updates<\/strong>” notification message.<\/p>\n

When I want back and checked for Windows updates, KB4074588 started to download again and reported\u00a0“Awaiting restart”. This loop kept going on and on…<\/p>\n

When I checked the update history, I could see that update failed with error code\u00a00x80070bc2<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The problem seems to be that a Windows service<\/strong> called TrustedInstaller<\/strong>, or Windows Modules Installer<\/strong> is not configured to start automatically after a reboot. If it doesn’t start up automatically after the reboot, it does not finish the update.<\/p>\n

So, here’s how I solved the KB4074588 and\u00a00x80070bc2\u00a0problem:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. I went into Windows Update and check for updates and waited until the status said “Awaiting restart”.<\/li>\n
  2. Then I opened the Services list and and located “Windows Modules Installer” and changed Startup type<\/strong> to Automatic<\/strong>. Remember to click the OK button.\"trustedinstaller<\/a><\/li>\n
  3. Then I restarted the machine.\u00a0After logging in and waiting for a minute or so, the update kicked in and displayed the following:\u00a0\"installing<\/a><\/li>\n
  4. Then I restarted the machine again, and verified\u00a0that the\u00a0KB4074588 was successfully installed:\u00a0\"KB4074588<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
