Please give me some feedback on FreeFixer

What do you think about the FreeFixer application and the freefixer.com web site? I've set up this blog post so you easily can post your feedback. Want to see a new feature? Did you spot a spelling error? Did FreeFixer fail to remove some malware file? Want to see more screenshots?

Please post your feedback below. Anything is welcome. If you see someone already has posted your suggestion, please give them a "thump up".

Great program! This thing fixes stuff that many of the popular programs don't fix. Only problem is it is hard to find, used it a while back and couldn't find it again for the life of me :-)

The only suggestion that I can make is to have some sort of centralized reporting feature. So you can load it up on network machines and have it run, then report the results and let someone know on a server if action needs to take place.

Hi Roger,

I tried FreeFixer v0.58 2 times but both times it hangs on scanning drivers. Is this a known issue?

@Ronald: There is a known issue where the scan sometimes hangs while the Windows operating system is downloading updates in the background. This can be resolved by visiting the Windows update site http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us to download all high-priority updates. Once the updates have been installed and the machine has been restarted, the FreeFixer scan should proceed from start to end without any problems.

Did this solve the problem?

But, I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night! ….

Suggested Change: Anyway that you might please change your Bot-Be-Gone question ... or else kill all of the 3-legged cats in the world (especially the one my neighbor has, please!) ... took me 2 hours of frustration caused by being denied dozens of times before I realized what the question meant to ask was "How many legs does a (4-legged) cat have?", (since 3-legged cats dont have 4 legs) ... well I finally got it right by knowing that if a cat had 100 legs he'd be a centipede; so I started at 99 and worked my way back to the solution ... thereby gaining safe-passage for myself into this comment window! (Boy!!! I Hope the question to get back out of here isn't so tough)! :-)

Anyhow,

I most-certainly-completely-and-unconditionally DO love freefixer ... but I am not IN love with her. Nonetheless,I must confess: I do want to have her babies!!!

"please remove free-fixer from my computer ASAP!"

Let me guess, and I'll betcha' bucks ta' donuts that I'm dead-nutz accurate too!? But only because there is no other rational possibility to explain *YOU*- here we go...

Roger crept into your house while you slept, grabbed a beer from your fridge and then installed his software onto your PC! When arriving at the Terms of Service agreement he even clicked "I Agree" for you!! It prolly wasn't personal; he's just a hard-hittin' go-getting type triple A+ personality ... I heard the guy wears 3 watches; ON EACH WRIST! And he was probably just bored that night!? - Anyhow, since his labor is voluntary and his Public Service FreeFixer offering is Freeware, he probably didn't charge you ALL that much ... (right on the money, so far ... right!!?) ...

Shortly after waking up, seeing the 6-DIGIT invoice that he left, you felt like you were being "price-gouged" and a bright girl like you "would NOT be taken advantage of!!" So, preparing for battle, you began mental-preparations first by forcing your mind to perpetually overlook the fact that all 6 of those digits on the invoice were ZEROES! You then paid a hypno-therapist $275 to clean everything up for your sub-conscious by replacing reality with a quaint fairytale about a sweet, sweet honorable Princess whose gold and jewels were all stolen from her by the Evil Hobbit Roger.

Upon finally logging into your PC for the first time that day a SUDDEN-HORROR came over you when you realized that your Windows 7 desktop(which had been factory-restored 2 days earlier) was missing the "Run" command from its Start Menu! Not knowing that it was obviously a result of "Roger-less condition" known as "Windows 7 Defaults" ... It would have mattered NONE at that point anyhow! So falling to your knees, and with a ROYAL-Scream ... screamed: "DAMN YOU ROGER!!! DAMN YOU ROGER AND YOUR FREEFIXER!!!" ... 180 seconds later you found your royal-'high'ness "here" ... on Roger's site ... ready to bark the royal-order demanding that he immediately undo the terrible things he had done to your kingdom ... On one end of the Royal-Statute you placed your Royal-initials, followed by an exclamation point(ASAP!) ... and at the other end you placed a "please" - obligatory smokescreen, superficial, "for the record" and artificial ... evidence-I'm-civilized - Royal-manners! A weak attempt to throw us off of your trail as a warped psychopath who suffers the consequences of her ACUTE Ego-Centric-Entitle-ism, (Correction: You aren't "suffering" anything here! You're the root-cause of the suffering!)..

OK moving on: and it looks like you regularly engage in risky, asocial-sociopathic behavior, are void of clarity in perception, lack ANY understanding of even the concept of gratitude and appear to have an "unnatural and unhealthy affinity" toward an estranged uncle. As well as 2 Sr. Citizen neighbors, small, high-RPM household appliances, a small group of barnyard animals and a broom that you affectionately refer to as "Bruce" ... Well, pretty good, huh!!? No need to worry - you have my word ... your secret is good with me! I will just refer to you as the "Royal-Pain" ....

Seriously, what is wrong with ppl? Wow!!! Download Freeware (GOOD Freeware!), Sign terms of Service. Fly past any and every warning about liability and who's responsible for it, if you install the software ... find yourself unhappy for ANY reason, and then have the 9lb nutz to come to the man's site and address him with a curt ORDER, preceded by a "please"!!??? I just don't get it at all????

PS - "please remove your computer from our World-Wide-InterWeb ASAP!"

Freefixer hangs while "scanning for drivers". Tried 4/5 times (after reboot, closing all programs, force launch as administrator etc.) but it always hangs. OS is Windows 7 64 bit with all the latest updates. The log in Appdata/Local is empty so I don't know what kind of additional info I could provide...

# 13 Feb 2012, 1:51

Roger Karlsson writes

@Ivan: Thank you for reporting in the problem. I'll have a look at it. To work around the problem you can temporarily disable the drivers scan by adding

plugins.drivers.enable=0

in the settings file. On Windows 2000, XP, 2003 and 2008 it is located at "C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application Data\FreeFixer\settings.txt" where %USERNAME% is your user name. On Windows 7 and Vista, it's found at "C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\FreeFixer\settings.txt". On Windows 7 and Vista you have to configure your system to display hidden files and folders to see the settings file. To do so, start Windows Explorer -> Organize -> Folder and Search Options -> View Tab -> Show hidden files and folders.

Thank you Roger. I've tried your suggestion and in fact now it skips the drivers scan but sadly it now hangs while "Scanning Recently created or modified files". It says it may take a while but I left the program running for two hours, I think it should be enough (the the cpu is an Intel i7 2.8Ghz and the system has 8Gb of ram) Anyway when I say "hangs" I don't mean that the program freezes or crashes...it just stay there doing nothing (if I click the links within the program they still open up in the browser) but if I try to close the program I get the usual "the program is not responding" Windows message. If you need other info feel free to ask :)

@Vern: Ticking the delete checkbox tells FreeFixer to delete the file from your harddrive. It should only be used if the file is known to be malware or if it belongs to legitimate software that failed to completely clean up after itself when uninstalled. If you click on the "more info" link you can find more information about the file, such as company name of the developer, what other users chose to do with the file, scan results from virustotal, etc.

And thanks for the feedback. I'll try to clarify what the delete checkbox does in the manual and in the FreeFixer program.

You have a great software program, and helped many computer users protect and fix their OS! I sent you a few suggestion
before and one was copy and past a file for deletion on reboot, instead of just typing, if folders were added it would be a great bonus. Adding scripts to identify virus and malware in Red is an excellent idea! To make your software the indisputable best, would be the simple detection and easy removal or Root-kits, worms and Trojans from the registry. I know this would be a monumental task but also a great ind-ever! That's 3 challenges, are you up to the pinnacle in software programing? I respect your work and effort in helping us all from computer treats, thank you Roger Karlsson and have a great 2013!

Hi,
i would like to see FreeFixer be a portable app that can scan instaler files to see if there is adware in there like OpenCandy and the various toolbars. The problem is that most AV companies don't list these adware cruds any more so if you upload to VirusTotal or Jotti often you will get only 1 or zero hits even though it has this adware in there. And well-known programs will change or remove and then replace the adware from version to version and none of these anti-malware will detect any more (like Spybot, or MBAM or SuperAntiSpyware - none will detect)

you could carve out a nice little niche for yourself if you could build a program that detects this crud and there can't be too many different versions of OpenCandy, Babylon toolbar etc out there. Also, it should be a portable app.

It would be an idea to have an update feature inside the software, both free and pro. Coming tot he website is a bit awkward. Even if the software were to say, open an browser window and confirm that a new edition is available, or you have the current addition would be good. For example, WinPatrol does this as does CCleaner.

Otherwise, I hope you keep developing this and never make a bloated mess of it like say what happened to Dr. Web AV, a good product was totally ruined by bloat and by no longer permitting a user to define security parameters...

Thanks so much for your anti-virus help! I have spent a month trying to remove a Zero Access rootkit from Windows Defender. The rootkit is a particularly vicious virus. When I tried to download and .exe file, I'd get an error message saying, "This download contained a virus and was deleted." I got that message even when AOL and Microsoft tried to take remote control of my computer to remove the malware.

Windows Defender is infected with a Zero Access rootkit, which gradually takes control of your computer completely and uses it to run other computers. Eventually you lose all control of your computer.

I didn't buy or click on "install Windows Defender." One day it just appeared on my hard drive. I deleted it but I still couldn't download .exe files. After following Malwaretips.com tips, I found another copy of Zero Access in a different folder and drive.(Full disclosure: I have no financial interest in Malwaretips.com, only gratitude.)

Malwaretips.com showed me how to remove the rootkit for FREE! Despite the fact that Windows Defender is infected with a rootkit, Microsoft wanted anywhere from 99 to 200 bucks to remove their infected program! AOL wanted $30, but Microsoft said AOL wouldn't be able to remove the rootkit!

One of Malwaretips.com's scanning/cleaning tools is Adwcleaner, which took me to this page, FreeFixer.

It took an entire day to get rid of Windows Defender's Zero Access rootkit, but it finally worked and didn't cost ANYTHING!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Dear Roger,
Thanks again for your invaluable help. I was a college English professor and because I'm such a computer bimbo they fired me because I couldn't figure out their buggy circa 2002 software.
So I broke out into a sweat when I read the bazillion steps to get rid of the disgusting Zero Access rootkit on your life-saving site.
Not a single tech "expert" at M*, A*L and other scam artists, even knew about the virus. One M* techie told me it was ransom ware.
After 12 hours straight except to walk my dogs I finally neutralized the rootkit. I wonder if all I needed to do was change defender.exe to defender.old. I was afraid that the evil genius behind Zero Access had read your instructions and added code that kept defender.old enabled and “infectious.” I was told I shouldn't have two anti-virus programs running on my computer because they were causing the problems downloading exe files. Hah!
You might add a zillionth step to the instructions for removing Zero Access: a note to the infected like me who had two anti-virus programs which were NOT causing the error message, despite what tech support staff say. I got that ridiculous explanation from half a dozen unhelpful staffers at A*L/M*.
Because I was so p*ssed off at M* for its Windows Defender infection, I changed the folder's name to WindowsDefender.fuc.
M* accepts no responsibility for or notifies MS customers that WD may have a vicious Trojan. I called their privacy department to report the virus which an M* techie f amazingly admitted during an earlier call I made to MSNoSupport.com. to me over the phone. M* couldn't have been less interested. Or willing to fix my computer for free, as you did.
Ironically, the main reason I wanted to get rid of the rootkit is I couldn't download Kindle's previewer.exe files for obvious reasons. After Malwarebytes scoured my computer (four about six hours!!!), I easily downloaded the Kindle previewer without getting the "virus detected/deleted" error message for the first time in months!
But now I can't get Kindle previewer to display on my monitor. It's not a big problem. Kindle has an online previewer that's adequate but without the extras of the downloadable previewer. I have three ! copies of the downloaded previewer on my hard drive, but can't access any of them. No error message. Nada.
I'm glad I got rid of the rootkit because there are a few other exe files I need to download from time to time. Until I read your instructions, I hadn't been able to download an exe for a month! Maddening!
Thanks so much for your help. PayPal donation is on its way!
Ciao for niao

Hi Roger - it looks like great work you're doing here and I'm surprised that I haven't come across Freefixer before. You appear to have the CCleaner of malware, and your product could be huge.
Therein lies the problem: because you're so little known, and given that it's a cruel world out there, it's hard to know who to trust. Are you promoted and reviewed elsewhere on the 'net? I'd work at raising your profile if I were you, otherwise suspicions that you're a well-disguise scam could grow. There's plenty out there; scams. Putting an unknown piece of software, as administrators, on our computers is normally a recipe for a grand rip-off.
I believe we need more information about you and your program ...and that all leads to future revenue.
Imagine if you actually acquired a reputation equal to Piriform's CCleaner. You'd 'clean up'. :)

@Gene: Sounds like the adware is still loaded into your browser. If you are using Internet Explorer, please review the items under "Browser Helper Objects" in the FreeFixer scan result. If you are using Firefox, please review the items listed under "Firefox Extensions".

Currently FreeFixer does not list Chrome Extensions, so you need to review them manually: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/187443?hl=en

Hope this helped you solve the problem. And by the way, Chrome Extensions will be included in the scan result in the upcoming FreeFixer v1.12 release ;)

I tried to scan twice, but it never finished after over 2 hours, yet your preview said scan would take 5 minutes...I am on a Vista home premium, with firefox (Default0 browser, and previous was IE9, which is still in my system..OTHER FULL SCANS TAKE HOURS, BECAUSE THERE ARE a ton, maybe millions, of TEMP INTERNET FILES, from IE5, that I can't get rid of...!!!!

Hello Roger,

please, can you check the system error message code 3 that I get at the FreeFixer tool v1.13 start up:

Failed to open fix log:
C:\Users\משהו\AppData\Local\FreeFixer\logs\fixlog.txt
System error message. Error code 3

I think this issue happens when the %localappdata% has Unicode characters in the path.

Thank you

Looking for Malware, Spyware, Virus and Trojan Remover that are run from DOS using a DOS boot CD or Grub boot CD etc.

Not the Generic BootCD's that are are about everywhere that always seem to have problems and I have tried a few 99% if not all are useless for running or then scanning for the above. Most softwares on such discs couldn't even run what use is that.

The only way to get Trojans for example and the others is to run in DOS where the OS drive isn't running any OS, so is just data. Since when run OS even early start the Trojans have already hidden themselves away and unable to be found.

So run from DOS to scan the OS disc is the only way to find threats and kill them, of course decision what to kill is ours. And so we are to blame if remove something that shouldn't be removed. Quarantined in a sandbox or container file so can be restored if remove a wrong file (false detections).

So why then is there no companies that offer scanning from DOS. That is where the OS disc doesn't have their sofwtare already installed Avira rubbish. That one is the only on that ran from those boot CDs and then complained when run that their software wasn't installed on any drive. Excuse me it's on CD isn't it ?

So as yours is portable can you make a CD version of it and USB for that matter. In case it isn't already able to be used that way. If isn't please BartPE and the rest Boot CDs not needed. Have rewritable Discs easy to write that with your CD tool and start scan simple as ABC. Oh please also allow scan even if someone has net connected and sees an update. For instances where they may only get one chance to scan the hdd.

Maybe some of what I say makes no sense or all of it does. Either way Trojans and other threats cannot really be found and got rid of if it is running on the same OS.

Threat Scanners are only as good as what they know. Yes all PCs will be infected until all threats are known.

Likewise Such threat detection software scanners can only know what is or isn't by been able to unpacked every file which includes every installer in existence into a sandbox for scanning. Sure could take most of the day (depending on installer and sub installers and archives and software sizes) but at least know the PC is clean as possible.

Why then does no threat software have the capability to do this, it is essential part of scanning. Better than scanning when software is been executed run.

Yes many installers encrypted but then many softwares made to decrypt them. Arm your software with all know and all installer and archives can be checked. Flag also those that cannot by telling the are password protected and they cannot be scanned until password is known. Have an encrypted password manager so next scan archive can be checked again.

Another idea if file has been checked and SHA1 or better is known. Then all scan software need to do is check hash against its database to know not need to be checked each scan if it is the same date, hash, size etc.

Just mentioning aloud since everyone seems to think have ABC software protection and I'm safe. That would be nice and do look forward to when that is just so.

So far, I find your software worse than useless.

As a non-SW person, your reports essentially say:

"Here's a bunch of stuff we know nothing about - you figure it out, and when you do, tell us!"

As I said, worse than useless!

@Carol: Sorry, I'm not sure I understand the problem you ran into. Do you get some error message when clicking the Quarantine tab in FreeFixer?

@AlamK: I agree that some of the info pages here at freefixer.com does not offer much value right now. For example, the information listed for each Firefox extension is not very useful. Same thing for many of the information pages related to registry keys, values and data.

Thank you very much for the feedback.
