@Phillip: This version of avgtpx64.sys looks legit too me. It's digitally signed by AVG so it should be safe. Have you uploaded your version of avgtpx64.sys to virustotal.com to see what the anti-virus programs detects?

It installs itself without your knowledge or authorization. Traces of AVG software is then found on your computer in various places. Even though you delete all those locations it somehow still remains installed. It hijacks your firefox browsers homepage just like Conduit search malware does. I've never encountered malware I could not get rid of myself but this is proving difficult. I'd just love to sue AVG into the dirt now. They are no longer an anti-virus company.

@Phillip: Ah, ok I get your point. As I now understand your post, it is actually the AVG software that is running on your machine, not something else that have the same filenames as AVG's files.

I've seen AVG's Secure Search bundled with many software downloads. Personally I think bundling is very annoying. However, I've never seen AVG Secure Search install without my authorization. Do you know if there's some download that installs AVG Secure Search without proper disclosure? If so, please let me know, I'd like to have a look at it, and in that case I might have to drop AVG from FreeFixer's white-list.

Did you run the AVG Secure Search uninstaller in the Add/Remove programs dialog? After running the uninstaller, were you allowed to change your browser's homepage?

I'm pretty good about checkingfor bundling too. I never authorized this. I did uninstall it from Programs in Control Panel and it is still present. I also did a complete search of my computer (including the registry) for anything AVG related and deleted anything I found. Yet it is still present and has hijack my homepage. This is pretty sinister of them to do this. I'm also quite adept at removing malware but can't find where this one is hidden. I'm thinking of uninstalling firefox completely but would hat to lose all my bookmarks etc.

Okay, so I came up with a fix I believe finally. You must do all of the following. Download Revo Uninstall and uninstall AVG Secure Search. Perform an ADVANCED uninstall as to remove all AVG files from the registry. Be careful to follow REVO's instruction so that you do not accidently delete the wrong entry from the registry. Doing so could be catastrophic. Next go to C:\ProgramData and look for the AVG folder and delete it. Now go to c:\windows\system32\drivers\ folder and delete avgtpx64.sys also. Open up your browser and type: about:config where you would normally type the url and hit enter. At the top you will see where it says SEARCH. Type AVG in the search box. This will allow you to view all the AVG secure search parameters installed in the browser. Look at the values on the right. Wherever it says TRUE or FALSE right click and essentially toggle it to read the opposite of what you initially see. For instance, if it says FALSE than make it TRUE. Go down the list and do it for all the values. Close out Firefox and restart the computer. Open up a new tab in FireFox to make sure you were successful. Now you are finished and can go back to your normal browsing.
