cnupd.exe causes my cpu usage to go sky high and eaises its temperature. As soon as I open Task Manager, the temperature comes down and cpu fan speed lowers. Once I close Task Manager, something gets run (I see the green circle beside my mouse pointer in Windows 7) and my temperature goes up and cpu fan speed increases.
How do I know cnupd.exe is the culprit? I run Process Explorer when the fan speed increases and I see cnupd.exe is using more than 70% of my CPU. When I "Kill" cnupd.exe in Process Explorer, everything gets back to normal until I open and close Task Manager again when it starts again.
I cannot delete cnupd.exe as "it is still open" somewhere. As I am in the middle of downloading something, I cannot say if this situation still holds once I reboot in safe mode.

This process kept my processor at 100% usage, thus increasing the PC temperature. I never saw it before, so i think it's a malware.

UPDATE: I went to services.msc and disabled cnupd.exe from my startup programs, but it ran itself each time regardless. So I restarted my PC into safe mode. Went to C:\users\Ali\AppData\Roaming\Windows Media Player folder and deleted cnupd.exe. 48 hours has gone by and no over-heating so far. Problem solved,... at least for the time being!

Hallo Ali,
You are absolutely right.
I did the steps as you said.
Thank you.
The thing is, somehow it runs again (in startup) after a week or 2 it was deleted.
and in the folder C:\users\Ali\AppData\Roaming\Windows Media Player it suddenly there again.
I tried to google this issue. I only find this site which specifically discuss about this issue.
Do you have any other solution for this.
Kindly share it with me.
I really appreciate it.
Regards,
Danang Prakoso

Hi Danang
Thanks for your reply. Just like you mentioned, it happened to me too only once in the past two weeks. cnupd.exe was in that same folder as before almost immediately after I updated Java on my pc. Since it happened less than an hour after updating Java, I'm assuming it has something to do with it. Anyway, this time, I just killed cnupd.exe in Process Explorer and went ahead and deleted from that folder without even having to restart in safe mode. It hasn't reappeared in my PC since I deleted it. I still monitor my cpu temperature on a routine basis, just to keep an eye on cpu usage.
