I found that savman.exe was installed by a browser hijack that would take me to www.adservinganalytics.com. This website would in-turn take me to various phishing websites. This hijack was installed when I tried to use web.whatsapp.com to access my WhatsApp account from my laptop. The date and time on the savman files matched the time of browser hijack infection. I tried several anti-virus tools and utilities and none would recognize savman as a threat. Finally, I found that a utility called rkill.exe that pointed to savman as a threat.
To remove savman.exe and related files, I did the following:
1. Disabled IE and removed Chrome (get rid of all browsers otherwise the hijack reinstalls savman.exe)
2. Restart windows in safe mode.
3. Start windows explorer and search for “savman” – two files found: savnam.exe and savman.pf (prefetch file). Delete savman directory containing savman.exe and delete savman.pf.
4. Restart windows in regular mode
5. Reenable IE and reinstall Chrome
