The error message is symnets.sys has failed. The error occurred after an update from Norton which according to their helpline did not come from them!

@Joan: When does the symnets.sys error message appear? Does it appear when you boot your machine?

Can you use your computer if you start it in Safe mode?

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17419/windows-7-advanced-startup-options-safe-mode

If so, it's possible troubleshoot your machine from Windows Safe Mode.

If you cannot trouble-shoot your machine from Windows Safe Mode, due to the machine halting during boot with a symnets.sys error message, you can try to rename the symnets.sys to symnets.sys.bak, using the Windows Recovery Command Prompt. Here's a guide that shows how to start the recovery prompt:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/windows-8-recovery-environment-command-prompt/

Once in the recovery command prompt, you can rename the symnets.sys file to symnets.sys.bak. Then restart your machine to see if it starts up successfully.

Tip 1: Use

bcdedit | find "osdevice"

to figure out where your Windows Installation drive is located. Mine was D:

Tip 2: Use the "ren" command to rename files.
